Gnats Badminton Club, established in 1934, later relocated to Eastgate Street in Lewes in 1938. Southover Badminton Club, on the other hand, played their matches in the Drill Hall on Mountfield Road before the outbreak of World War II. Lastly, Southdown Brewery Club used to operate out of the brewery but had to leave when the hall was requisitioned for the war effort.

During the war years, the three clubs joined forces to become Lewes YMCA. However, it wasn't until 1945, when players were demobilised, that the club truly flourished.
