The club's origins can be traced back to the Soldiers field at Roundhay, where the first golf ball was struck in the Leeds district. In 1896, several gentlemen decided to form a golf club and obtained the lease for the present course at a rent of 25 per annum. They named the club Leeds Golf Club, and it has continued to thrive ever since.

One notable figure in the club's history is the famous golf architect Dr. Alastair MacKenzie, who was a member of Leeds Golf Club from 1900 to 1910. During his membership, he provided valuable advice on the bunkers and layout of the course. Dr.

MacKenzie's influence can be seen in his design of numerous prestigious courses worldwide, including St. Andrews, Royal Melbourne, and Augusta National. Leeds Golf Club is proud to be an active member of the Dr. Alastair MacKenzie Society.
