For those who are new to sailing, Learn2Sail offers an “Introduction to Sailing” course. This four-hour adventure takes participants out onto the waters of Lyttelton Harbour on a keel boat. Participants will receive a brief introduction to sailing and have the opportunity to gain hands-on experience. Afternoon tea in Diamond Harbour is included, guaranteeing a relaxing and enjoyable sail.
Level 1 of Learn2Sail's courses is the “Introduction to Keel Sailing” course, which spans four hours over three days. This course is suitable for absolute beginners and covers topics such as hazards, equipment, parts of the boat, sailing definitions, sail hoisting and trimming, collision avoidance, man overboard recovery, weather forecasts, suitable clothing, knot tying, and crew positions. The next course will start in early September.
Once participants have completed Level 1, they can progress to Level 2, which is the “Competent Cruising” course. This course consists of three four-hour sessions and focuses on reinforcing knowledge and building confidence as crew and skipper. The course includes practical exercises on safety checks, using VHF radio in emergencies, understanding marine engines, berthing, man overboard exercises, sail hoisting and trimming skills, helming under instruction, and basic navigation skills.
