Langstone Pilot Gig Club

Langstone Pilot Gig Club, proudly established as Hampshire's first Cornish Pilot Gig Club by Chris, has been a cornerstone of the Hayling Island community since 2013. Chris wanted to bring the exhilarating sport of gig rowing to local residents and has since created a welcoming environment at Northney Marina, taking full advantage of the stunning waters of Chichester and Langstone harbours.

As a Community Amateur Rowing Club (CASC), Langstone Pilot Gig Club thrives on the dedication of its volunteers. Chris has seen the club grow to approximately 150 members, aged 12 to 80-plus, all sharing a common love for rowing. The club’s mission is clear: to make rowing accessible to everyone in the community while keeping it affordable.

One of Chris's key achievements is fostering successful racing squads that compete at the top levels. Not just for the elite, the club also runs an extensive training programme for those looking to improve their skills. Chris ensures the club also caters to those who prefer social or endurance rowing, ensuring there's something for everyone.

The club's regular training sessions are held every weekend, with additional mid-week social rowing and morning/evening training sessions to suit all schedules. Chris also organises longer expedition rows, offering members diverse rowing experiences.

Regatta participation is a significant highlight under Chris’s leadership. Langstone Pilot Gig Club competes in various events, forming part of the Jurassic League alongside eight other clubs on the Jurassic Coast. The season kicks off in March with the Three Rivers Race in Caradon and wraps up with the World Pilot Gig Championships in May on the Isles of Scilly, including the Newquay Championships, Brixham Vets, Swanage Supervets, and the Great River Race on the Thames.

Chris is particularly proud of the club’s emphasis on the overall well-being benefits of rowing. The club offers free introductory rowing sessions, hoping to attract individuals who might feel excluded from traditional sports. Rowing, as Chris champions, is a gentle outdoor exercise, ideal for all ages and fitness levels.

Beyond fitness, Chris has cultivated a sense of camaraderie within the club.
