

Langley Chess Club is a vibrant and welcoming community of chess enthusiasts in Langley, British Columbia. Led by experienced tournament directors Brian Davidson and Umang Banatwala, the club provides a platform for players of all skill levels to come together and enjoy the strategic game of chess.
The club hosts regular tournaments at the Brookswood Senior Centre located at 19899-36 Ave in Langley, BC. One of the upcoming tournaments, scheduled for September 2-4, 2023 (Labour Day Weekend), will follow an open Swiss format with 6 rounds. Each round will have a time control of 90 minutes per player, with a 30-second increment. The maximum number of players allowed is 120, and if there are more than 80 players, the tournament may be split into two sections.
Entry fees for the tournament are $70 until August 15, and $80 after that date. Langley Chess Club members receive a discounted entry fee of $70. Players rated 2300 (CFC) or above can enter for free. Family members of players can join for $40 each for the 2nd and subsequent family members.
Prizes for the tournament are based on entries, typically around $2800, with special awards for the Best Under 2000-rated player, Best Under 1700-rated player, and biggest upset. The tournament is open to players of all levels, and sponsors are welcomed to support the event.
Registration for the tournament can be done online, and players can also purchase a CFC membership at registration or through the CFC website. Half-point byes may be requested for all rounds except the last, where a zero-point bye will be given. A one-hour grace period is allowed before games are forfeited.
The Langley Chess Club tournament is a qualifier for the BC Closed Championships. The winner of the Langley Open will qualify, and in case of a tie, the player with the highest cumulative score will be declared the winner. Free parking is available at the venue's lot and surrounding streets for all participants.
