Anniversary Brochure showcases Fred's legacy and the impact he had on the club.
The Ladykillers Hockey Club, founded in 1957, was a renowned club consisting mostly of international hockey players and their families. The club was established by a group of hockey players from Hertfordshire, who were seeking a way to spend their Sundays and escape the hustle and bustle of Radlett and St Albans. The name “The Ladykillers” was chosen after a chance drive-past of the local cinema, and scarlet and white were selected as the club colours.
In the early years, the Ladykillers participated in the Thanet Festival held at the end of April. As the club gained recognition, they began playing fixtures on Sundays throughout the season, leading to an increase in their reputation. President Fred Taylor and Secretary Pat Robson, along with other founding members Neil Dangerfield and Alan Sanders, built a strong team that competed throughout London.
Over time, the Ladykillers grew stronger with the addition of international and well-established players from various clubs, all with ambitions to fulfil. The Ladykillers' calendar shifted, and the Thanet weekend was replaced by the Folkestone Easter Hockey Festival, further cementing their presence in the hockey community.
Following Fred Taylor's passing in 2001, the club faced the possibility of closure. However, a revival led by individuals such as Denys Shortt, Richard Dodds, Simon Mason, Don Williams, Chris Rule, and Janine Martin ensured the club's continued success. In 2011, nearly 200 people attended the Ladykillers' weekend, with four Ladykillers teams participating. The club has remained determined to include families, resulting in the creation of a women's team and children's matches.
The Ladykillers have had a significant influence on the hockey community, with several children of club members becoming hockey internationals. Notable examples include Alistair Brogden, son of Angus Brogden, and Simon Faulkner, son of David Faulkner.
The spirit of Fred Taylor, founder and president of the Ladykillers, lives on within the club. Known for his charm, friendliness, extreme generosity, and passion for hockey, Fred's legacy continues to inspire and drive the Ladykillers. The 50th Anniversary Brochure serves as a testament to Fred's dedication and the thriving community that he helped establish.
