Our adult classes are held on Mondays and Wednesdays from 7pm to 8pm at St Albans Hall, conveniently located at 443 Dominion Road, Auckland. We are currently in the process of expanding our offerings to include children's classes, so be sure to check back or register your interest with us.
For those who are new to Kyokushin Karate, we understand that starting something new can be intimidating. However, we assure you that our knowledgeable instructors will guide you through each step of your journey. We encourage you to have fun during your first class and embrace the learning process. Remember, we all began as beginners and progress at our own pace.
When attending your first class, we recommend wearing loose-fitting sports clothes such as track pants and a t-shirt. If you decide to commit to training on a regular basis, we can provide you with a gi, which is a karate training uniform. Please ensure all jewellery, especially rings, are removed for safety purposes.
To stay hydrated during training, we advise bringing a bottle of water. Our sessions are designed to be physically demanding, and you may sweat quite a bit. Additionally, if you have any injuries or health concerns, please inform the Sensei or lead instructor so that we can accommodate your needs.
Kyokushin Karate Auckland is an affiliate of New Zealand Kyokushin Karate (Ltd. Led by Shihan Peter Jennings, who is also the Director of NZKK. Our organisation traces its roots back to the late 1970s, when Shihan Jennings, Sensei Ron Discombe, and Sempai Jim Jennings established the Marist Kyokushin-kai Karate Club. This club has produced numerous black belts, national champions, and representatives for New Zealand.
Dedicated to the physical, technical, and emotional development of students, NZKK follows the traditional and modern training methodology developed by the late Sosai Masutatsu Oyama and supported by Kancho Yoshikazu Matsushima. Shihan Ron Discombe, one of the pioneers of Kyokushin karate in New Zealand, brings a wealth of experience and expertise to our club. He began his training in 1969 and has travelled to the UK and Japan for extensive training with renowned fighters. Shihan Ron is among the few New Zealanders who have competed in two World Tournaments, achieving the rare distinction of being among the last 32 competitors in the 1983 event in Tokyo. In November 2018, he completed his 5th Dan at the Kyokushin Karate World Cup Tournament in China.
Kyokushin karate is not only a widely recognised martial art but is also known as the “hardest” karate style. Our training methodology focuses on toughening and preparing individuals for self-defence by experiencing the physical aspects of combat. “Kyoku” means ultimate or extreme, while “shin” represents truth. With Kyokushin, you will learn the true essence of martial arts and develop important life skills that extend beyond the dojo.
