The club offers training and instruction in authentic Sōsuishi-ryū Jūjutsu and Iai-jutsu, under the authority of Shitama Manzo Sensei, 16th Dai Menkyo, and the Sōsuishi-ryū Jūjutsu Kai Australia. Additionally, Kumataka Dojos is affiliated with Judo Australia, offering training in traditional Kōdokan Jūdō.
The club also practises Okinawan Karate, ensuring a well-rounded martial arts experience. With multiple locations across Australia and even one in Thailand, Kumataka Dojos is dedicated to maintaining strong connexions with the origins of these arts in Japan. Regular travel to Japan for training and instruction is a crucial component of their commitment to deepening understanding and skill.
Established in 2017 by Peter Williams Sensei and Thomas Crooks Sensei, Kumataka Dojos is a national Australian non-profit organisation. The club is open to inquiries from committed budōka (martial arts practitioners) as well as those who are interested in embarking on a journey into martial arts.
The Bayswater branch of Kumataka Dojos is situated in the vibrant city of Perth, Western Australia. The Epping and St George branches are located in Sydney, New South Wales, and the Mukdahan branch is in Thailand.
Kumataka Dojos takes its name from the Mountain Hawk Eagle, a majestic bird that inhabits the Yoshino Mountains where Sōsuishi-ryū Jūjutsu originated. This bird symbolises the elegant, powerful, and intelligent nature of the martial arts practised within the dojos.
The arts practised at Kumataka Dojos encompass a range of styles. Kōdokan Jūdō is a dynamic grappling martial art and sport that involves throws, hold downs, chokes, and armbars. Sōsuishi-ryū Kumi-uchi and Koshi-no-mawari is an early Edo-era ryūha that emphasises grappling with armed and unarmed opponents, as well as the use of weapons such as the katana.
Kumataka Dojos is a registered national Australian non-profit organisation committed to the practise and preservation of these arts. Each art practised within the dojos is directly affiliated with its source of origin, ensuring the highest level of authenticity and expertise. The Sōsuishi-ryū Jūjutsu Kai Australia represents Dai Shihan Manzo Shitama, the 16th Hereditary Headmaster of Sōsuishi-ryū Jūjutsu.
In addition to their affiliations, Kumataka Dojos is also associated with Judo Australia and the International Judo Federation (IJF). Regular training visits to Japan are conducted for ongoing instruction and training, fostering a strong connexion to the birthplace of these arts.
For any inquiries or queries, Kumataka Dojos welcomes contact through their website or social media platforms. The club is dedicated to bringing the rich traditions of these martial arts to individuals who are passionate about honing their skills and embarking on a fulfilling journey.
