Koshinkai Aikido Dojo is a martial arts school located in Auckland, New Zealand. The dojo is dedicated to the practise and teachings of Aikido, which is known as the 'Way of Harmony'. Aikido originated as a Japanese Budo and has gained popularity worldwide among individuals who seek personal growth, self-awareness, and a deeper understanding of themselves and their relationships with others.
At Koshinkai Dojo, training is conducted in a traditional Japanese-style space that provides a positive, safe, and friendly environment for practitioners. Beginners are welcome and can easily start their Aikido journey by joining the scheduled practise or enrolling in one of the Introduction to Aikido courses offered by the dojo.
The emphasis in Aikido training at Koshinkai Dojo is on non-competitive, cooperative, and creative learning. Regular practise helps develop “calmness in action” and the ability to relax in high-stress situations. Aikido as a self-defence martial art places equal importance on the inner aspects of conflict resolution as it does on the physical and technical aspects.
In addition to open-handed techniques, Koshinkai Dojo also practises Aiki weapons such as bokken (wooden sword), jo (staff), and tanto (knife). This fundamental link to the study of the sword further enhances the overall Aikido training experience.
To achieve balance and inner harmony, meditation is incorporated into the training at Koshinkai Dojo. Shinto-based exercises inspired by nature are part of the training to help practitioners achieve this balance between the “inner” and “outer” aspects of Aikido.
Koshinkai Dojo offers a range of classes to accommodate different schedules. Morning and evening practises are available throughout the week, focusing on both Aiki weapons and general Aikido techniques. The dojo also conducts an Introduction to Aikido course for individuals interested in learning about the history, philosophy, and basic principles of Aikido.
Throughout the year, Koshinkai Dojo organises special events such as Gasshuku (Training Camps) and Kangeiko (winter training) to provide opportunities for practitioners to further develop their Aikido skills and spirit.
Membership fees at Koshinkai Dojo are affordable and flexible. Options include a monthly autopay of $60 (with a one-time $100 joining fee), a six-month payment of $330 (without a joining fee), or an annual payment of $600 (without a joining fee). Visiting Aikidoka are welcome to train at the dojo, with a mat fee of $10 per session.
