Korean Martial Arts & Fitness (KMF) has been a trusted provider of Taekwondo training in Australia for the past 15 years. Starting in 2020, KMF proudly introduces “Taekyun”, the original form of Taekwondo recognised as an intangible cultural heritage by UNESCO, as well as “Hopaesool”, a unique weapon martial art.
Korean Martial Arts is a highly systematic and scientific discipline that goes beyond physical fighting skills. It is a way to enhance the spirit and improve one's life through the training of the body and mind. With a history spanning 5000 years, Korean Martial Arts have evolved and been known by various names throughout the course of time. In ancient Korean martial arts history, a defence martial art was referred to as “Taekyun” or "Subak” during the Chosun Dynasty.
In the 1950s, Korean martial arts underwent modernisation and development, drawing inspiration from other Oriental countries such as Japan and China.
KMF offers three different Korean Martial Arts classes, starting with Taekwondo. Taekwondo, the modern form of Korean martial arts, was named in the 1950s and has since become a global sport with an international reputation. It sets itself apart from other oriental martial arts with its physically dynamic and active movements, particularly highlighting foot skills. Taekwondo emphasises the unity of body, mind, and life, and strives for harmony in all aspects.
Proper poomsae (poses) lead to correct confrontations, resulting in formidable power.
Taekyun, the traditional Korean martial art and the origin of Taekwondo, was practised by Korean soldiers until the late 19th century. It also became a popular sports game during the Chosun Dynasty, mainly played by young Korean boys. Today, the sports form of Taekyun has been recognised as an INTANGIBLE WORLD HERITAGE by UNESCO. Taekyun utilises fluid and dynamic kicks and hand techniques to knock over opponents, following a unique rule called PUM (Triangle).
Hopaesool takes inspiration from the Hopae, an identification bar carried by men over the age of 16 during the Chosun Dynasty. Nobles used ivory “Hopae”, while ordinary people had wooden ones. This form of self-defence weapon became known as Hopaesool and has been systematically developed as a martial art.
