Kodokan Martial Arts

Welcome to Kodokan Martial Arts, a Martial Arts school located in Darlington, New Zealand. At Kodokan, tradition and dedication are at the heart of our organisation. We are committed to preserving the essence of Karate (empty hand) and Kobudo (Okinawan weapons) as authentic forms of Budo (Martial Arts), going beyond just sport.

Kodokan Martial Arts is a non-profit organisation, and our instructors do not take a wage for their teaching. All the money goes towards keeping the dojo (school) open and providing the best experience for our students. We believe that true Budo encompasses more than just physical techniques. Our students delve into the rich tapestry of these martial arts, embracing the language (Gengo), etiquette (Reigi), and philosophy (Tetsugaku) that accompanies these disciplines.

We welcome students of all ages, from 5-year-olds to senior citizens. New students are invited to experience their first two lessons free of charge, in order to explore Karate (from 5 years) and Kobudo (from 14 years) and decide on their preferences and schedule. We have also taught students who were novices to black belts from other schools, as they were eager to learn more than just the martial sport.

Our strong sense of community and high-quality instruction often leads students to return to us when they relocate back into the area. This is a testament to the calibre of our instructors and the dedication of our students. All our lessons are given by highly experienced Sensei (Instructors) and Shidoin (Instructors in training) with many years of experience. We recognise the unique expertise of each instructor, and they receive guidance from higher-ranking Sensei to ensure our students receive the highest level of knowledge transfer.
