Located in Mount Gravatt, Kobudokai Australia is a martial arts school dedicated to the practise of Shint Mus-ry j, the oldest style in Japan for using a stick (j) in combat. The school is deeply rooted in tradition and offers a comprehensive curriculum for practitioners to learn and master the techniques and principles of this ancient martial art.
Founded in the early 17th century by Mus Gonnosuke, an expert in Tenshin Shden Katori Shint-ry and Kashima Shinden Jikishinkage-ry, Shint Mus-ry j has a rich history. According to legend, Gonnosuke once fought Miyamoto Musashi, a renowned swordsman, with a wooden sword measuring over 4 feet in length. Despite his defeat, Gonnosuke was inspired to develop a new method of using a staff-like weapon, leading to the creation of the j. He designed shorter and more manageable j techniques, which became the foundation of Shint Mus-ry j.
At Kobudokai Australia, training is conducted through two-person pre-arranged forms, known as kata. The curriculum consists of 64 kata divided into different sets, each with its unique purpose and character. Students begin their study by mastering the twelve basic stick and sword techniques, known as kihon waza, which encompass the fundamental movements of Shint Mus-ry j. As students progress, they delve into the various kata sets that aim to equip them with the skills necessary to use the weapon effectively in combat.
While kata training may be misunderstood, it is an integral part of traditional martial arts. Practising these partnered forms allows practitioners to internalise advanced principles and develop highly-refined movements. In the realm of Kory Bugei, or classical martial arts, it is believed that when all the kata become one, practitioners transcend the forms and reach a state of boundless mastery.
In addition to Shint Mus-ry j, Kobudokai Australia also incorporates the teachings of Shint-ry Kenjutsu into its curriculum. This swordsmanship system includes twelve kata, eight of which involve long sword vs. long sword and four that focus on short sword vs. long sword.
Students have the opportunity to further explore the art of swordsmanship and expand their skills in different combat scenarios.
Kobudokai Australia places great value on preserving and passing on the traditional arts associated with Shint Mus-ry. Through rigorous training and dedicated practise, students have the opportunity to not only develop their physical abilities but also cultivate discipline, focus, and a deep understanding of Japanese martial arts. Whether you are a novice or an experienced practitioner, Kobudokai Australia welcomes individuals who have the passion and dedication to learn and grow within this ancient martial art.
