Knaphill Bowling Club, located in Woking, Surrey, is a welcoming and friendly sports club dedicated to promoting the enjoyment of lawn bowls. With top-quality facilities, the club provides both recreational and competitive playing opportunities for members of all skill levels. Those who visit the club will quickly understand why it is a beloved destination for bowlers in the area.
The club's rich history dates back to its establishment in 1926 on its current site. Over the years, the club has undergone extensive development and improvement. In the late 1980s, a modern clubhouse was erected through the support of funding from the National Lottery, Woking Borough Council, and loans from members. This new clubhouse, opened in 1990, provided a significant upgrade from the previous small clubhouse without electricity.
The green was expanded in 1991 to include six rinks in each direction, and in 1997, the clubhouse was further extended to its current size. Additional enhancements, such as a watering system for the green and a clubhouse canopy, have been implemented to ensure the best possible experience for members. The ditches were also recently stabilised, and new machinery was acquired to support the greenkeepers.
Membership at Knaphill Bowling Club is available to both new and experienced bowlers, with acceptance contingent upon the payment of an annual membership fee. For the 2022 season, the membership fee is set at 110, while new bowlers can take advantage of a reduced fee of 50 during their first year. The playing season runs from mid-April to September, and the green is accessible every day except Monday and Thursday mornings when maintenance occurs. Members are encouraged to take advantage of coaching sessions or request personalised coaching to improve their skills.
The club also hosts friendly matches and participates in local leagues, offering an array of opportunities for competitive play. Notably, the club has achieved success in various competitions at the Area, County, and National levels, and has even boasted a few international players.
The management committee for 2023 is composed of dedicated individuals who ensure the smooth operation of the club. Led by President Alan Tingay, the committee includes Secretary Keith Smith, Treasurer Malcolm Wood, Men's Captain Peter Dixon, Ladies' Captain Sue Patey, Men's Vice Captain Keith Smith, Ladies' Vice Captain Mirella Basso, Match Secretary Mick Garbutt, Competition Secretary Krysta Garbutt, and committee members Chris Hames, Mags Maunder, and Rodney Morrison.
In addition to the excellent playing facilities, members have access to the club bar located within the clubhouse. This bar serves a range of beverages, creating a convivial atmosphere where members can relax and socialise after a game.
