Killcare Frigid Digits Winter Swimming Club Inc. , located in Central Coast, is a renowned sports club with a rich history dating back to 1976. Originally known as Hardys Bay Frigid Digits Winter Swimming Club, the club changed its name to Killcare Frigid Digits in April 2016. As a proud member of the Winter Swimming Association of Australia, the club celebrated its 40th anniversary in 2016.
Killcare Frigid Digits takes great pride in its participation in the Australian Winter Swimming Championships. Since its inception, the club has had swimmers competing in every championship. Barney Reeves and Ron Malcolm were the club's first competitors in 1976, with Reeves being a Foundation Member and Patron who sadly passed away in 2015 at the age of 99. Ron Malcolm, also a Foundation Member, currently serves as the club's President.
The club has a strong sense of camaraderie among its members and welcomes swimmers of all ages and abilities. Every Sunday at 9:30am, the Killcare Frigid Digits gather to swim. However, as the club does not have a pool, they anchor ropes each week to create a makeshift swimming area. The club offers heats for both 30 metres and 50 metres, providing an exciting challenge for swimmers as they navigate through the ocean waves and compete without a black line to follow.
Onlookers often find amusement in the swimmers' struggles to swim straight, resulting in some good laughs.
Despite the challenges posed by swimming in the ocean, Killcare Frigid Digits has achieved significant success in competitions. Many of their members have made it to Finals in the Australian Winter Swimming Championships, and several have won medals, including the women in the club. The club has also won “closest to time relays” and had a successful 4-person relay in the “dash for cash” at the 2015 competition in Wagga Wagga.
The Killcare Frigid Digits season runs from the first Sunday in May to the last Sunday in August, with their Championships marking the end of the season. The club holds their weekly races in the ocean, constructing their pool by securing lane ropes to rocks at Putty Beach and dropping anchors at designated markers. This unique approach to winter swimming sets Killcare Frigid Digits apart from other clubs.
Joining the Killcare Frigid Digits Winter Swimming Club offers an opportunity to participate in this beloved sport and enjoy the camaraderie of fellow swimmers.
