Hey Sports Community,
This note is from Alex, your organiser here at Kilbirnie Recreation Centre in Wellington. Alex just wanted to reach out and give you a heads-up on what the centre has to offer and a few things to keep in mind.
The centre is your go-to spot for wheel-based activities. Whether you’re into skateboarding, scootering, or roller and inline skating, there’s loads to do. The rink here is pretty spacious at 20m by 40m with sport court flooring, safety barriers, and netting. They also set up removable ramps and obstacles during public skating times to keep things interesting.
For families with little ones, check out Tinytown. It’s a cool play area packed with ride-on toys and activities—perfect for preschoolers.
Operating hours are pretty straightforward: Monday to Thursday, the centre opens from 9am to 10pm, and over the weekends, it wraps up by 9pm. But do keep an eye on the Google calendar for any changes, especially public skating times.
Got a balance bike, skateboard, or skates? You’re in luck—those are all in. But heads up—no pedal bikes or those with training wheels allowed.
There are two main session types. The family session prioritises families and young kids under 8, with smaller ramps for the little ones. The public session is open to everyone and ideally suits the more experienced riders.
For the social and sporty types, there are plenty of programmes and events here. You’ve got skating lessons, Skate Fit classes, school programmes, and even birthday parties. Business house indoor football, pickleball and more are also on the schedule.
One unique feature here is the World Chase Tag Ultimate Movement Volleyball League. It’s a mixed-gender tag league for ages 13 and up, happening once a month on Friday nights. Spectators are welcome for free, so bring your mates along.
Admission charges: It’s $4.50 for adults and $3.00 for kids. If you’ve got a LeisureCard, it’s just $2.20. Skates are $4.20 to hire, and Tinytown is $5.50 for preschoolers. Concession passes are also available for regulars.
