Ken Shin Kai is a Martial arts club located in Mount Gravatt, offering training in the art of Japanese swordsmanship through the combined disciplines of Kendo and Iaido. The name Ken Shin Kai derives from the meaning of manifesting a true mind, reflecting the attitude that is embraced during sword training.
The club offers a comprehensive 10-week introduction to Kendo course for beginners, covering the basic concepts of the art. Upon completion of the course, a short course in bogu wearing, which is the armour worn during Kendo practise, is conducted. This leads to inclusion in the intermediate group, allowing further advancement and skill development. Beginners also have the opportunity to start training while beginner courses are not running, following the same 10-week programme.
Special children's classes are held on Saturday mornings, specifically designed for ages 9-16. These classes provide a safe and encouraging environment for children to learn Kendo and Iaido. All instructors have the necessary Working With Children accreditation (Bluecard). Children are also encouraged to attend other classes held on Monday and Thursday.
The study of the Japanese sword at Ken Shin Kai goes beyond physical techniques. It allows practitioners to experience their essential human nature by cutting through the ego and removing the concerns of everyday life. By fully releasing stress and tension, clarity of mind and increased vitality are developed. These skills can be applied to all aspects of life, including business and interpersonal relationships.
Kendo and Iaido work on complementary aspects of the same principle. Kendo focuses on external aspects, developing awareness of distance and timing. Practitioners use bamboo swords and body armour for safety, allowing for full-contact practise. Kendo also serves as a competitive sport with opportunities for participation at club, state, national, and international levels.
Iaido, on the other hand, internalises the training and allows practitioners to develop awareness of their inner spirit. In Iaido, a true sword (shin ken) is used to visualise and engage with an imaginary opponent. Concentration and mindfulness are crucial to avoid injury. Iaido is often described as “moving Zen,” emphasising the meditative and introspective aspects of the practise.
The Ken Shin Kai Honbu Dojo serves as the training venue for Kendo and Iaido. They offer regular 10-week beginner courses, as well as opportunities for beginners to join at any time, following the same programme. Personal tuition is provided for beginners, and they are taught in conjunction with the main class, fostering a sense of belonging and integration. Club shinai (bamboo swords) are provided for the duration of the course.
Ken Shin Kai aims to create a welcoming and inclusive community for anyone interested in Japanese swordsmanship. Whether one is seeking physical fitness, personal development, or the thrill of competition, the club offers a supportive environment for growth and learning. With experienced instructors and a strong emphasis on traditional principles, Ken Shin Kai is dedicated to preserving and passing on the legacy of Japanese swordsmanship in Mount Gravatt and beyond.
