Kendo (Rembuden) is a martial arts school located in Wellington, New Zealand. As one of Wellington's leading Kendo clubs, they strive to provide a warm and inclusive training environment for individuals interested in the Japanese martial art of Kendo.
Kendo, which translates to “the way of the sword,” is deeply rooted in the traditional culture and history of Japan. It embodies the spirit of the samurai warriors from the past who faced the fundamental matters of life and death with dignity and honour. At Rembuden Kendo Club, they aim to carry on this legacy by teaching students not only the physical techniques of Kendo but also the values and disciplines associated with it.
While Kendo does have competitive aspects, the primary focus at Rembuden Kendo Club is on using the practise of Kendo to cultivate the mind, body, and character. Through rigorous training and study, students develop discipline, self-control, and a strong sense of personal growth. Kendo becomes a vehicle for individuals to attain an elevated, dignified manner of living.
In Kendo, practitioners, known as Kenshi, are armed with bamboo swords called shinai. The objective is to strike the opponent while adhering to specific rules and conditions. There are four striking zones in Kendo: men (head), kote (wrist), do (torso), and tsuki (throat). To score a valid strike, one must demonstrate spirit, proper posture, accuracy in hitting the opponent's designated target area, and alertness after the strike.
At Rembuden Kendo Club, the instructors understand that success in Kendo starts by overcoming oneself. They teach students the concept of Fudshin, the immovable mind, which is a long-term objective in Kendo practise. Fudshin emphasises the importance of self-discipline, mental fortitude, and the ability to face challenges with composure and perseverance.
Rembuden Kendo Club is proud of its history of producing outstanding Kendo practitioners who have represented New Zealand at various international competitions. Several members of the club have been recognised for their fighting spirit and achievements at the World Kendo Championships.
Whether an individual is a beginner or an experienced Kenshi, Rembuden Kendo Club welcomes all who are interested in learning and practising the art of Kendo. With a strong emphasis on fostering camaraderie and mutual respect, the club provides a supportive community where students can grow and excel in their Kendo journey.
