In Japan and began his Aikido training under the direct guidance of O-Sensei. He moved to Australia in 1965 and established Aiki-Kai (Australia) to spread the teachings of Aikido. Sugano Sensei passed away in 2010, but his legacy lives on through his dedicated students and Aikido dojos like Blue Mountains Aiki-Kai.
Blue Mountains Aiki-Kai has been practising Aikido in the stunning Blue Mountains since 2005, with additional classes starting in Katoomba in 2011. Whether you're a beginner or a seasoned practitioner, everyone is welcome to participate in our classes. If you haven't seen Aikido before, feel free to come along and observe a class to get a taste of this modern, non-competitive, Japanese martial art.
Aikido is not just about physical techniques, it is a way of personal and spiritual growth. The founder, Morihei Ueshiba, also known as O-Sensei, developed Aikido to harmoniously unite the individual's ki (energy, spirit) with that of the universe. Through self-discipline and continuity of practise, Aikido training helps cultivate fluid movement, relaxed posture, mental focus, and alertness.
In Aikido, control over an assailant is achieved by redirecting their energy and movement, rather than through brute force. This makes Aikido suitable for individuals of all body sizes and strengths. Consistent training in Aikido also improves fitness, agility, flexibility, and muscular strength.
At Blue Mountains Aiki-Kai, our teaching philosophy is rooted in the traditions of Samurai warriors. The techniques we practise are based on hand-combat techniques (tai jitsu) derived from sword movement. We also incorporate practise with Japanese wooden weaponry such as the jo staff, bokken sword, and tanto knife.
Our dojo is affiliated with Aikido NSW, recognised by Aiki-Kai (Australia), the only Australian Aikido organisation with membership of the International Aikido Federation. We strive to faithfully pass on the teachings of Sugano Sensei, conducting classes in his manner. Students at our dojo are encouraged to practise at other Aiki-Kai dojos and participate in the Aiki-Kai twice-annual national training schools for a well-rounded Aikido experience.
