About

The “Karate: London Dojo” is a renowned martial arts school located in London, dedicated to teaching the discipline of Kyokushin Karate as it is taught in Japan. The dojo prioritises the development of character and the training of the mind and body to contribute positively to society, emphasising Sosai Mas Oyama's Kyokushin spirit of modesty, ambition, serenity, filial piety, and benefiting others.

The founder of Kyokushinkai karate, Masutatsu Oyama, was born in 1923 in South Korea. At a young age, he began his martial arts journey by studying Chinese Kempo, and later relocated to Japan, where he honed his skills in Judo and became a student of Gichin Funakoshi. Oyama's dedication and talent led him to achieve remarkable milestones, including winning the All Japan Karate Championship at the age of 24.

After this pivotal victory, Oyama committed himself to sharing his vast knowledge of karate. He spent a year in solitude in the mountains and temples, intensively training and meditating on Zen precepts to pursue enlightenment. His rigorous training routines enabled him to develop incredible physical strength, demonstrated through feats such as breaking trees and rocks with his bare hands.

Upon returning to society, Mas Oyama embarked on a global journey, showcasing his karate skills by fighting bulls and defeating challengers from various martial arts backgrounds. His reputation spread rapidly, attracting individuals worldwide who were eager to learn his unique style of karate. Today, Kyokushinkai dojos can be found in over 123 countries around the world, with “Karate: London Dojo” being one of the esteemed establishments carrying on Oyama's legacy.

The symbol of Kyokushinkai Karate is the Kanku, derived from the Kanku Kata. Its points represent the fingers and symbolise the ultimate or peaks of achievement. The thicker sections within the design signify power and represent the wrists. In the centre of the Kanku, infinity is represented, implying depth.

The enclosing circle denotes continuity and circular action, with the Kanku serving as the foundation.

” Karate: London Dojo” offers a comprehensive syllabus that provides students with a clear pathway to learning and improving their skills in Kyokushin Karate. The syllabus is designed to guide students through progressive levels of training, ensuring they develop a strong foundation and continue to grow in the martial art.

The dojo holds its training sessions at two locations within London. London Dojo 1 is situated at St Mary's Hall, while London Dojo 2 operates from the Blue Beetle Room. Both locations provide a supportive and dedicated environment for students to train and reach their full potential.

At “Karate: London Dojo,” inclusivity and respect are paramount. Discrimination or prejudice based on ethnicity, race, nationality, politics, philosophy, religion, sex, or age is neither promoted nor tolerated. The dojo recognises that every individual possesses equal rights and values the pursuit of international friendship and world peace as the ultimate goal of Kyokushin Karate.
