Karana Flames Netball Club, founded in 1964, is one of the largest clubs within the Southern Tasmanian Netball Association (STNA). With 34 teams competing in the RACT Insurance League and the Southern Tasmanian Netball Association, the club has over 270 registered players, coaches, umpires, and supporters. Since its formation, Karana has preserved the values of its founding members, proudly maintaining the original red and blue club colours.
The club was initially established by Cleone Probert (Boniwell), who had played with another club before travelling overseas. Upon her return in 1964, Cleone formed the first Karana team with players from the disbanded Friends Old Scholars team and others. The name “Karana” comes from an Aboriginal word meaning “Quietly” or “The Quiet One. ” The club receives support from the Tasmanian Government.
Training for Karana's first team was held in the gym at Hobart Matriculation College, where Cleone taught. Since then, the club has experienced remarkable growth and success, becoming one of the most prominent clubs within the STNA.
