Joetaiji

Joetaiji is a prestigious Tai chi school located in Durham, New Zealand. The school, founded by Joe Harte, offers authentic Taiji teachings that have been passed down through an unbroken chain of lineage from ancient Taoist principles.

At Joetaiji, the focus is on inner development, with classes centred around deep body intelligence. Students are guided through deep breathing exercises, which oxygenates the body and brain, and waves of movement that massage the lymphatic system. These practises aim to energise the nervous system and increase neuromuscular control.

The school provides a sanctuary for individuals to escape the internal chatter and stress stimulated by the outer roughness of the world. Through Taiji and meditation, students are encouraged to plunge the fire of their mind into the waters of their body to create balance in body, emotions, and mind. Each class begins by closing down the everyday 'chattering' mind and then awakening the deeper mind by listening into the deep body sensations using the five inner senses.

Joetaiji offers a comprehensive training programme that includes the 5 Loosening Exercises of Huang Xingxian, Cheng Manqing's 37-move Short Form, Yang Chengfu's 108-move Long Form, Huang Xingxian's Fast Form, and various fixed pattern pushing-hands exercises. Classes also include 5 to 15 minutes of guided meditation.

The school is directed by Joe Harte, a highly experienced instructor with over 25 years of intensive Taiji training. He is supported by senior students who have over 10 years of experience. The classes are designed for those who wish to delve deeply into the art of Taiji, but beginners are welcome all year round.

Joetaiji regularly offers classes and seminars in the Northeast of England and other locations. The school follows a methodical, step-by-step teaching process that aims to lead students deeper into their Taiji practise.
