The Japan Karate Association - Shotokan Karate Coalition – Western Australia (JKA SKC WA) is a Karate club and martial arts school located in Mount Hawthorn, Western Australia. The club specialises in teaching the Shotokan style of karate, focusing on high standards and technical requirements set by the Chief instructor, Shihan Keith Geyer, who is also the Chief instructor of JKA SKC Australasia.
As an official registered branch of the Japan Karate Association and Nihon Karate Kyokai, JKA SKC Australasia has been given permission by JKA Headquarters to represent the group in Australasia. The club's programmes are designed to cover the required curriculum in a positive environment, helping members develop coordination, reflexes, and stamina while learning valuable life skills.
The club offers classes for different age groups and skill levels. Beginners, known as Peewees and Juniors, have their own classes on Tuesdays and Saturdays, followed by intermediate classes for Peewees and Juniors, and advanced classes for Intermediate Juniors and Seniors. Additionally, there are special classes focused on Kata and Kumite on Thursdays, available by invitation only.
Classes are offered from January to mid-December, with no breaks for school holidays except for pupil free days and public holidays. The training venue is the Mt Hawthorn Lesser Hall, with entry through Braithwaite Park.
The club is led by Shamyla Lavea, the Dojo Head, and all members are encouraged to book a trial session to experience the training firsthand. The club offers membership options, including a complimentary first class, and various pricing plans based on age groups and frequency of training, with discounts available for families.
