The title of Hanshi (Master) in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the art of Itosu-ryu Karate-do.
The Japanese Karate – Do Itosu-Kai Central Coast Branch is a well-established martial arts school located in Toukley. Their primary focus is the ancient and honourable art of Itosu-ryu Karate-do, also known as the Way of the Empty Hand. They offer both traditional Japanese karate and modern sports karate, catering to the needs and preferences of their students.
One of the core aspects of their training is the mastery of kata, which are forms that encompass the fundamentals of self-defence and sparring techniques. Through learning and practising kata, students develop confidence, self-esteem, coordination, and resilience. These benefits extend to practitioners of all ages, making Itosu-Kai a suitable choice for both younger and older individuals.
The Itosu-Kai Karate-do All Australia branch has been operating for over three decades, which is a testament to the high level of qualification and experience of their teachers. With a strong emphasis on safety and enjoyment, they create a welcoming and supportive environment for all their members.
If you are new to karate-do or feel unsure about attending your first class, rest assured that you will not be alone in your experience. All members and instructors at Itosu-Kai have gone through similar feelings of awkwardness and being overwhelmed in their early classes. However, you will quickly find yourself at ease as you connect with like-minded individuals and begin learning the basics of karate-do.
Character building is at the heart of what Itosu-Kai aims to achieve. Above all, the art of karate-do revolves around respect, which is instilled in each student. As you progress in your journey, you will develop friendships, enhance your physical fitness, and strengthen your spiritual resilience. These aspects will serve as invaluable assets in your pursuit of mastery in Itosu-ryu karate-do and will enable you to serve humanity with humility, courage, and compassion.
The legacy of Sensei Anko Itosu, the founder of Itosu-ryu Karate-do, is deeply ingrained in the teachings of Itosu-Kai. Sensei Itosu reorganised the self-defence technique known as “Karate-Jitsu” to be more suitable for physical education, with a clear focus on character building and physical exercise. He also created many kata, including the widely practised Pinan Kata, which are still taught today in various modified forms around the world.
Sensei Kenwa Mabuni, the senior student of Sensei Itosu, perfected the kata and techniques of Itosu-ryu and succeeded him as the 2nd Soke (keeper of the style). Sensei Mabuni also studied under Sensei Kanryo Higaonna of Naha-te and amalgamated their teachings to form the foundation of Shito-ryu, named in honour of both masters.
The technical system of Shito-ryu, which underlies Itosu-Kai, draws from the teachings of Itosu and Higaonna, as well as other influential teachers that Sensei Mabuni had the privilege of studying under. O'Sensei Ryusho Sakagami, a long-time student of Sensei Mabuni, became the 3rd Soke of the Itosu-ha and made significant contributions to the development and recognition of Itosu-ryu as a distinct style.
Under the leadership of Sensei Sadaaki Sakagami, the 4th Itosu-ryu Soke and son of OSensei Sakagami, the traditional Kata that have been passed down through three generations are cherished and preserved. He has been recognised for his dedication and expertise by the Japan Karate-do Federation (JKF), receiving the title of Hanshi (Master) and serving as the Chairperson of the JKF Central Technical Committee.
