Jane Mackinnon School of Dance

Welcome to the Jane Mackinnon School of Dance (JMSD Dance), a premier dance school located in Southampton. We offer a wide range of classes for all ages and abilities, including Ballet, Modern, Jazz, Tap, Musical Theatre, Street/Hip Hop, Contemporary, and Stretching.

Our classes cater to everyone, from beginners to advanced dancers, providing a nurturing and supportive environment for growth and development. For our youngest dancers, we have a special tinies class for children under 5, which combines Tap and Ballet. We also offer adults-only classes, such as Tap for beginners, improvers, and advanced dancers, as well as Jazzercise, a blend of basic jazz dance and fitness exercises. Additionally, we have a general level ballet class suitable for individuals of all abilities.

At JMSD Dance, we believe in the power of dance to keep you fit, to bring joy, and to foster friendships. Whether you are looking for a new hobby, pursuing a potential career in dance, or simply wanting to enjoy the pure pleasure of movement, our classes are designed to meet your needs.

Classes take place at various venues, including Nursling and Rownhams Community Centre, Nursling and Rownhams Village Hall, and St John's Church Hall in Rownhams. You can find more information about our classes and their locations on our full timetable.

We understand that committing to a new activity can be daunting, which is why we offer free taster sessions for all dance genres. This allows you to try out different styles of dance before making a decision. Additionally, we offer LAMDA Acting lessons (London Academy of Musical and Dramatic Art) in solo, duo, and small group formats. Our accredited ISTD dance and LAMDA examinations also count toward UCAS points for higher education.

Every two years, our talented dancers take the stage in our School Show held at The Point Theatre. This captivating production showcases our students' storytelling abilities through dance, leaving audiences spellbound. In 2022, we delighted audiences with our interpretation of “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

We are proud to be members of the Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing (ISTD). Our students have the opportunity to enter ISTD examinations, ranging from Primary to Advanced levels. ISTD examinations from grade 5 and above provide UCAS points for those pursuing higher education. Exams from the Intermediate level also qualify students to train as dance teachers.

Please note that exams are not held during our school dance show period.
