Island Aikido, located in Victoria, offers powerful self-defence training without aggression. The classes are held at the Prospect Lake Community Centre in Saanich and are led by world-class instructors. Aikido is a comprehensive and effective martial art that can help individuals develop a stronger, more coordinated body and a disciplined mind. Regular classes in Aikido are not only fun but also provide a way to maintain health, vitality, and a balanced outlook on life.
Aikido involves circular movements and techniques to redirect the energy and body of an attacker, making it a defensive and non-aggressive art. The emphasis in training is on cooperation rather than competition, and students learn to look after each other and themselves to practice throws and pins safely. Timing and sensitivity are prioritized over speed and strength, making Aikido suitable for children, youth, women, and men of all ages.
Island Aikido is affiliated with the Shioda International Aikido Federation in Tokyo, Japan, and offers separate curriculums for children, youth, and adults. Ranking is achieved through a colour belt system leading to black belt levels, with instructors receiving dan ranking capability up to 5th degree black belt from Japan. The club also focuses on developing new instructors and hosts regular high-ranked guest instructors from Japan and other countries.
As a non-profit society registered in British Columbia, Island Aikido's fees go towards running expenses, with instructors volunteering their time. The classes are designed to relieve stress, improve physical fitness, and promote mental health and a positive outlook.
