Sensei Jon Donohoe would like to extend a warm welcome to all members of the sports community to the Ipswich Shotokan Karate Club (ISKC). Established over thirty years ago in Ipswich, Suffolk, ISKC is a non-profit organisation affiliated with the Japan Karate Association England, part of the world's largest and most prestigious karate association, the JKA.
Shotokan, known for its focus on self-defence and self-discipline, is the most widely practised style of karate. ISKC offers lessons that cultivate self-awareness, self-discipline, self-confidence, self-respect, and self-defence skills. All instructors are highly qualified, holding Dan (black belt) grade certifications, fully insured, CRB checked, and registered with the Japan Karate Association England.
Run entirely by volunteers, the club offers lessons and competitive training for both children and adults. The coaches, some of the most qualified and respected in the area, ensure quality instruction and equal, affordable opportunities for all students. The club operates at various locations within Ipswich.
Sensei Jon, a 4th Dan, has been practising Shotokan Karate since 1985 under Senseis Alf and Wei-in Hatton. He took over the stewardship of ISKC in 1990 and has spent the last three decades building it into a highly respected karate club. Sensei Jon has received Dan grades from renowned instructors such as Sensei K. Enoeda, Ohta Sensei, and, more recently, Imura Sensei, Sawada Sensei, Kobayashi Kunio, and Shina Sensei.
Supporting Sensei Jon are Assistant Instructors Alice Donohoe, Philip Harold, and Barry Crozier, along with club secretary Angela Donohoe. The club has also received significant support from Sensei Ohta, 7th Dan JKA, the chief instructor to the Japan Karate Association England.
Sensei Ohta, a graduate of Takushoku University in Japan, trained under many great JKA instructors and was the official assistant to the legendary Sensei Enoeda from 1982 to 2003. Since then, he has continued to teach and inspire students in the art of Shotokan Karate.
