Inori Aikikai Aikido Dojo, located in Bury Saint Edmunds, is a martial arts school dedicated to promoting the art of Aikido as it was created and taught by O-Sensei Morihei Ueshiba. Aikido is a dynamic Japanese martial art that is suitable for individuals of all ages, sizes, and builds.
At Inori Dojo, the focus is on using the attackers' movement against them, incorporating a combination of empty-handed techniques and practising with weapons such as swords, staffs, and knives. All training is conducted in a safe and friendly environment, emphasising body movement, harmony between partners, and safe falling.
Whether individuals are seeking applicable self-defence techniques, spiritual development, physical health improvement, or peace of mind, they can find it in Aikido. Inori Aikikai Aikido Dojo follows the Aikikai style of Aikido, which was developed by Aikido founder O-Sensei during the 1920s.
Beginners are always welcome at the dojo, and they can book two free taster sessions to get a glimpse of what Aikido training entails. Participants are encouraged to wear loose and comfortable clothing, be open-minded, and be ready to have a fun evening.
The dojo offers two classes each week. The Thursday class takes place in the main hall, providing plenty of space for up to 30 people. This class focuses on both weapons training and empty-handed techniques, and the mats used are of the judo type (vinyl). The Thursday class is funded by the Suffolk Sports Fund through Suffolk Community Foundation, and the fee is 5 per session, plus an annual membership/insurance fee of 25.
The Monday class, held in the RC room upstairs, offers a smaller space and limited numbers (up to eight people). It caters to both advanced students preparing for gradings and beginners who are learning the basics. Only empty-handed techniques are taught in this class, with the occasional use of a wooden knife (tanto). The mats used are also of the judo type (vinyl).
The fee for the Monday class is 3 per session, plus the same annual membership/insurance fee of 25.
Inori Aikikai Aikido Dojo follows six principles in their Aikido school: conflict resolution, self-discipline, focus, confidence, fitness, and humility. These principles are integrated into the training sessions to promote personal growth and development.
