Innellan Golf Club, located just down the coast from Dunoon in beautiful Argyll, is a picturesque golf club perched above Innellan village. The club has a rich history, as it was originally opened in 1891 and has remained true to its original design over the past 125 years.
The course itself is a challenging nine-hole heathland course with stunning panoramic views of the Firth of Clyde. From every point on the course, golfers can admire the breathtaking scenery, stretching from Helensburgh to the north all the way to Ailsa Craig in the south. On clear days, the islands of Bute, Cumbrae, and Arran are clearly visible, along with the Heads of Ayr.
With a Standard Scratch of 64 from the medal tees, Innellan Golf Course offers a combination of long par 3s and tricky par 4s. One of the standout holes on the course is the aptly named Rubicon, the longest hole measuring over 400 yards. This challenging par 4 requires a good drive, as there are out of bounds markers along the entire right side of the fairway. The Rubicon burn runs across the fairway and presents an obstacle that requires a drive of at least 250 yards to carry.
Most players choose to lay up, leaving a long fairway shot of over 200 yards uphill to a raised green. A par on this hole is highly regarded by club members and considered equivalent to a birdie.
The final hole at Innellan Golf Club is a tricky par 4 that runs back up to the front of the clubhouse. Accuracy is crucial for the second shot in order to hold on to the small raised green. Adding to the challenge, players often face either a setting sun or a stiff southwesterly wind. As the final putt is made, fellow members on the clubhouse verandah are known to watch, creating a memorable and potentially nerve-wracking finish.
Visitors are warmly welcomed at Innellan Golf Club, but it is recommended to check the fixture list or contact the club in advance. Certain dates may have Ladies or Gents competitions, and the course is closed for competitions on most Monday evenings throughout summer. Visitors can book their round online in advance or pay and play on the day by following instructions on the clubhouse noticeboard. Please note that payment is cash only.
The clubhouse at Innellan Golf Club is open on a part-time basis during summer and is accessible to both members and visitors. Whether you are a local looking to become a member or a visitor enjoying the stunning views and challenging course, Innellan Golf Club offers a memorable experience for all.
