Have you ever wondered why some people seem to get injured & others don't? 

Is it simply luck? 

Or is there more to the story? 

Sports injury statistics suggest that up to 90% of injuries occur as a result of non contact mechanisms. This means that no external force has contributed to the injury itself. You see it all the time, an athlete is running, they take a step to change direction & seemingly out of nowhere they drop down, unable to move. 

Why is this a big deal? 

In almost all cases, non-contact injuries have a whole host of key contributors known as 'modifiable risk factors'. In other words, they are almost entirely preventable. 

A big part of what we do as Exercise Physiologists is identify that factors that go into causing these injuries. As human movement experts who specialise in the function of musculoskeletal health, it's our job to help the human body to function optimally. Our tool for this is movement. 

Unfortunately, optimal movement is something that escapes us in our current modern world. 

If you've ever heard the saying 'Use it or lose it', then you'll understand why. 

Because we spend the vast majority of our lives sitting & being relatively inactive (considering that as we evolved we would've likely walked 16+ km per day), we as human beings are starting to 'lose it'. In this case it is our ability to move well. 

If you ever get random niggles, aches & pains; feel tight throughout the day, or have experienced a sudden tweak of your neck, back or other area of your body, then you have already felt the ramifications of starting to lose your ability to move. 

And if you experience these symptoms when simply going about your daily life, how do you think your body would fare during sporting activity? 

You see, the cause of injury is pretty simple. It can essentially be summed up in one little equation. 

Injury = force > capacity. 

Whenever we move, we are applying forces to different structures of our body. If our tissues don't have the capacity to deal with this force, or we're moving in a way that places unnecessary force or certain areas of our body, we start to open the door for injury to creep in. 

Yet on the flip side we can use the exact same forces that would cause injury to allow ourselves to be better than ever: 

Adaptation = Capacity > Force. 

Whenever we move in a way that applies forces within the sweet spot that is below our capacity, our body will respond by adapting. This is how elite athletes can play their sport with crazy amounts of forces going through their body, night in & night out.
