Ilford Karate Club, founded in 1999 by Shihan Nick da Costa, is a top-notch martial arts school in Ilford, London. Nick, a former British, European, and Commonwealth Karate Champion, runs the club alongside Shihan Maria da Costa, who is also a decorated British and International Champion.
Ilford Karate Club's mission is to teach effective self-defence while boosting fitness, flexibility, and confidence. They focus on Kyokushin karate, known for blending traditional techniques with full and semi-contact tournament opportunities. The club is part of the British Karate Guild (BKG) and the World Karate Guild, giving students access to regular gradings, summer camps, squad training, competitions, and courses.
The instructors at Ilford Karate Club are highly trained, DBS checked, and qualified first-aiders, ensuring a safe and professional environment. They welcome new members of all experience levels. Beginners simply need tracksuit bottoms, a tee-shirt, and enthusiasm.
The club trains students from age six and up, with no upper age limit. Fees are £6 per session for children and £8 for adults. Students will also need a karate licence, costing £25 for under 16s and £35 for those 16 and over. A partial fee applies if you start training later in the year.
Ilford Karate Club is located at St. Pauls Community Sports Hall on Barley Lane, just a five-minute walk from Goodmayes Station, with free on-road parking. Classes run on Tuesdays and Thursdays, starting at 7:30 pm. Junior classes end at 8:30 pm, and adult classes wrap up by 9 pm.
Special events like gradings provide a chance for students to advance their skills. For instance, the next grading is on Tuesday, 5th December, from 7:30 pm to 9 pm, with a £12 fee for students up to 3rd Kyu (2nd green belt). Students must have a current licence, wear a clean gi with badges, and bring pads for sparring.
The last session of the year is on Thursday, 14th December, and training resumes on Tuesday, 2nd January 2024, after the Christmas break.
