At Ignis Martial Arts Academy, the focus is on Hapkido, a combative martial art system with deep roots in the traditions of feudal Japan and modern South Korea. Hapkido translates to “the way of harmonising energy” and is not simply a fighting style, but a system of martial and philosophical principles. The ultimate goal of Hapkido is self-perfection and self-protection.
In terms of physical self-protection, Hapkido equips students with the skills to inflict sophisticated violence against criminal attacks. Techniques taught at the academy include strikes, throws, locks, limb control, weapon-removal, and weapon-retention. However, the primary objective is not to engage in fights, but to neutralise threats conducting non-consensual, criminal violence.
The academy also offers training in Teukgong Moosul, a specialised martial art that originated from Hapkido and was created and utilised by the South Korean military. Teukgong Moosul focuses on close-quarters combat and integrates hand-to-hand techniques with weapons. It is military-grade combatives repurposed for civilian use in self-protection, with a strong emphasis on aggressive and direct finishes.
Another area of focus at Ignis Martial Arts Academy is Daito Ryu Aiki Jujutu, a martial art with a history dating back more than 900 years. Daito Ryu is considered a “koryu” or “oldschool” martial art that predates the Meiji era when combative elements of martial arts were removed. It serves as the foundation for more modern systems like Aikido and Hapkido, offering students a physical journey through living history.
Ignis Martial Arts Academy is dedicated to teaching classical combative arts with modern-day applications. The academy believes that martial arts serve as raw material for a multitude of skills and applications. It provides students with the necessary building blocks to develop conflict resolution, self-protection, defence of third parties, multiple threat management, weaponry use, disarmament and retention, arrest, detention, removal, and general fight essentials.
The instructors at Ignis Martial Arts Academy have acquired their martial skills and applicational knowledge through their own extensive training and interactions with experienced practitioners and teachers. The academy follows the standards set by the South Korean government-approved (KHF) and Hapkido United USA, ensuring that students receive top-quality and authentic instruction.
