Hutton Poplars Bowls Club, located in Brentwood, is a friendly and sociable club that was formed in 1991. The club actively participates in a number of local leagues and also organises friendly games throughout the season. Members have the opportunity to meet and enjoy a game on club night, held every Wednesday evening.
For those interested in playing bowls, Hutton Poplars Bowls Club offers coaching sessions at the green every Tuesday morning at 10:30 during the playing season. No prior experience is necessary, but participants are required to wear flat shoes.
Hutton Poplars Bowls Club is affiliated with Bowls England, ECBA, and ECWBA, ensuring that members have access to a wide range of bowling opportunities and competitions.
The club's history is rich and dates back much further than its formation in 1991. The site of the bowling green was previously the location of the Residential Children Home, which was opened in 1907 by the board of Guardians operating in the London borough of Poplar. The home faced criticism and opposition for its relocation of children to Hutton from various small homes in Poplar.
In 1982, the site passed to Essex County Council and was sold for redevelopment. The bowling green, originally constructed by the builders of the new estate, welcomed SELO bowling club in 1990 but only for one season. The Hutton Poplars Bowls Club was then formed in 1991 by members of the over 50s sports classes held in the neighbouring Bishops Hill Centre.
The club faced challenges with the original surface of the green, which was found to be unsuitable, especially in wet weather. Members raised approximately 5000 to have the green returfed. The club also sought permission from the council to build a purpose-built clubhouse, but this request was denied. Instead, a demountable structure was erected with funds secured from the Sports Council and additional contributions from the members.
In compliance with the General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR), Hutton Poplars Bowls Club respects the privacy and protection of members' personal data.
Overall, Hutton Poplars Bowls Club in Brentwood offers a welcoming and inclusive environment for members of all skill levels to enjoy the sport of lawn bowls.
