No Ka Ho'omana'o Ana Ia Berlin is a vibrant international group of almost 60 dancers and musicians brought together by their shared love for Hula. With members across Germany and local groups in cities like Berlin, Dortmund, the Black Forest, Munich, and Schweinfurt, we strive to honor the culture of Hawai'i through the art of dance. Our name originates from an inscription on the sleigh bells gifted by the German Emperor to Hawaiian King David Kalakaua during his visit to Berlin in 1881, signifying "In Remembrance of Berlin."
Our mission is to deepen understanding of Hawaiian culture and revive the intercultural exchange with Hawai'i through the storytelling dance of Hula. We delve into the creation of traditional Hawaiian instruments, costumes, and jewelry made from natural materials, enriching our performances with authenticity and respect for the heritage of the islands. Since 2005, No Ka Ho'omana'o Ana Ia Berlin has found a home in the dance school Traumtänzer in Berlin-Tempelhof, where we train and teach beginners who are eager to embark on their Hula journey.
Under the guidance of Kumu Hula Frank Akima from Honolulu, we study in the tradition of renowned Hula Master Uncle George Holokai. Our close connection to Kumu Kaulumahiehie Amaral from Big Island, Hawai'i, and recently Kumu Lorna Lim, enriches our knowledge and practice of Hula, allowing us to immerse ourselves in the elegant Lim Family style with gratitude and aloha. We are honored to share our passion for Hula and the Hawaiian culture with such knowledgeable mentors, spreading the spirit of aloha wherever we go. Join us every week at Tanzschule Traumtänzer at Flughafen Tempelhof, and connect with us across Germany for a unique Hula experience.
