Welcome to Hooe Point Sailing Club, a small sailing club located in Plymouth, New Zealand. The club was originally established to make sailing and boating more affordable for Civil Servants and their friends. With the largest dinghy fleet in Plymouth, Hooe Point Sailing Club offers exciting competitive racing on Monday nights during the summer and Saturday mornings in the winter, taking place around Plymouth Sound. The majority of dinghies that participate in our races are single-handers, although we do have a few older style double-handers as well.
For dinghy storage and facilities, we have partnered with The Mountbatten Watersports and Activities Centre, which provides over 50 year-round dinghy spaces for our members. In addition, members can enjoy discounted access to the facilities at the Mountbatten Centre bar.
Some of our members also enjoy cruising together around Plymouth Sound and even further afield. We often organise summer trips to Cawsand for a delicious pasty and pint. If enough dinghy members are interested in day trips, we try to arrange safety boat cover for added assurance.
For yacht owners, we have strengthened our relationship with the Cattewater Harbour Commissioners, who have allocated their P-Trot opposite the Oreston Slipway to HPSC members. It is important to note that this mooring is suitable only for bilge keel and motor boats with a maximum length of 28ft. However, the Cattewater Harbour Commissioners are very helpful and eager to find other suitable moorings for our members. More details about their moorings can be found on their website.
Additionally, we have also established connexions with the Plymouth Marine Centre on Laira Bridge, which offers reduced-rate winter storage for our members.
In terms of racing, dinghy racing takes place every Monday during the summer starting at 18:30. For the winter months, we switch to Saturday mornings with races beginning at 10:00. We extend a warm welcome to dinghy sailors from other clubs who wish to join us during the winter months. Racing is open to all dinghies with a Portsmouth Yardstick Number, as well as to yachts using our club handicap system.
We also hold an annual regatta and have successfully organised Civil Service Regattas in the past few years. Non-club members from PPSA sailing clubs are welcome to participate in our races, though membership is required to be eligible for trophies.
Yacht owners can also participate in our “Tuesday Nights Cruise With Purpose,” where we set sail from the Mount Batten start line at 18:00 for slower boats and 18:15 for faster ones. This is not a race, but rather an enjoyable sailing experience around the buoys. Our aim is to finish together at around 19:45 back at the start line. The course for each session is sent by text message on Tuesday morning.
