Hey Sports Community,
Just a quick note from our organiser, Alex, who's been working hard to keep everyone in the loop about our favourite climbing spots. Alex wanted to share some exciting news about Honley Quarry in Holmfirth.
Honley Quarry has been a go-to climbing spot since the 60s, with the Huddersfield Phoenix members leading the way and later additions by Simon Panton in the 80s. It offers plenty of routes and even some boulder problems around the edges. Sure, the bouldering landings can be a bit tricky - think muddy slopes - but there's a hidden gem called Asbestosis Font 7a, ideal when the weather’s not playing nice.
The quarry boasts more than 40 routes, from Diff to E6 6c, so there's something for everyone, regardless of skill level. Plus, there’s room for new routes, especially around the main bay’s back wall, if anyone’s up for a bit of cleaning up.
Getting there is easy. From the library roundabout at the top of Westgate in Honley, take Thirstin Road until it changes to Old Moll Road. Park in the laybys on the left when you see buildings at the end, and various paths from there lead up to the quarry.
Good news, there are reliable anchor points - trees and fence posts at the top of the routes have got you covered.
Keep an eye out for a downloadable PDF TOPO guide that Alex is putting together. It’s full of images and videos of climbers in action to get you inspired.
Honley Quarry’s split into sections. The Left Natural Edge, about 50 metres left of the main quarry, has four problems between Font 3 to Font 5. The Subsidiary Bay Left Wall greets you at the quarry entrance with routes like Phil’s Traverse (HVS 5a) and Superstition (E1 5b).
The Subsidiary Bay Back Wall and Right Wall feature routes like Zig And Zag (MVS 4b) and Smoking Slab (E1 5b), or Clever Lever AKA Jenny’s Corner (HS 4b) and Sore Fingers (HVS 5a).
So, if you fancy a climb, head over to Honley Quarry. It’s got a bit of everything for everyone, from seasoned climbers to newcomers. Alex reckons it's a must-visit, so grab your gear and get climbing!
Cheers,
