Hitchin School of Dance (formerly The Granville School of Dance) was founded by the original Principal of the school, Mollie Gilbert. In 2024, the school will be celebrating 70 years of providing dance classes in Hitchin. As the longest established dance school in Hitchin, they take great pride in their rich history and commitment to dance education.
The school is now under the leadership of Principal Gabrielle Hammond, a former student of both Mollie and Lorrayne Spindler, who took over in January 2009 after Mollie's retirement. Gabrielle has been teaching alongside Lorrayne since 2015 and is excited to continue the legacy of the dance school.
Hitchin School of Dance offers a wide range of classes, including I. S. T. D Ballet, Tap, and Modern, Theatre Jazz, Jazz Technique, Lyrical/Contemporary, Strength & Stretch, and their brand new Street classes.
They also offer adult classes in Ballet and Tap. With qualified ISTD Teachers, all teachers at the school are DBS checked and First Aid Trained, ensuring the safety and high-quality instruction for all students.
Class sessions are held Monday to Saturday during term time at Tilehouse Street Baptist Church and Lucas Lane Sports Club. The school keeps class sizes limited to ensure that each student receives individual attention and guidance from the teachers. Regular I. D exam sessions are held, and the school also puts on a successful show every other year.
At the end of each term, the school holds a watching week, allowing parents to come and see the progress their child has made.
