Hello Sports Community,
Kate King here with a quick update about the High Wycombe Bowling Club! It's been around for over 100 years and is actually the third-oldest club in the county. Founded back in 1902, it started off on Harlow Road with a modest 4-rink green.
Back then, the club was set up by 35 shareholders who all chipped in £35 each. The founding members were a mix of local big shots like furniture makers, doctors, solicitors, and even Lord Desborough.
As High Wycombe grew, so did the club. By 1927, it was clear we needed more space, so the club moved to Chestnut Avenue. Here, we got our first 8-rink green in the county, built for £1,000 with Cumberland Turf. A new clubhouse was also added for £700, complete with oak beams and a timber-lined hall. Special thanks to James Elliott & Sons for the 80 handmade wheelback chairs and J. W. Hawkins for the president's chair.
Over the years, the club has hosted some big matches, including games against visiting South African sides in 1935 and 1995. To mark our centenary, Roger Turpie put together a booklet on the club's history, but we're always looking for more stories, photos, and articles from our members to enrich our history further.
While the game of bowls is steeped in tradition and etiquette, we encourage everyone to get familiar with these practices. It's all about enjoying a respectful and fun time on the green. Don't worry if you make a mistake; the community here is friendly and supportive, even if some of the seasoned players might be quick to offer advice.
We're all about maintaining a sense of tradition, community, and sportsmanship. New players are always welcome! The green is currently closed for the winter but will reopen in mid-April 2024. Kate King
