Located at 580 Finch Ave W in North York, the Herbert H. Carnegie Centennial Centre is a well-known ice skating rink that offers a variety of recreational activities for the community. Formerly known as the North York Centennial Arena, this facility was renamed in honour of the legendary hockey player, Herbert H. Carnegie, who sadly passed away in March 2012.
Herbert H. Carnegie was one of the first black hockey players in the semi-professional leagues, facing racial barriers that prevented him from playing in the National Hockey League. Despite this, he had a successful career in minor league hockey in Ontario and Quebec's senior hockey leagues in the 1940s and 1950s. Carnegie was not only a talented hockey player but also a champion golfer and a successful businessman.
He founded the Future Aces Hockey School in 1955, which provides bursaries for post-secondary education to children aged 12-14.
The indoor ice rink at the Herbert H. Carnegie Centennial Centre is a popular spot for leisure skating, hockey games, and figure skating. In the summer, the ice rink transforms into an indoor dry pad for sports such as ball hockey and lacrosse. The facility also features amenities such as dressing rooms, an indoor track, kitchen, lounge, and multipurpose rooms, making it a versatile space for a variety of activities.
With accessibility features such as accessible parking spots, pathways from the TTC or sidewalk to the entrance, Wheel-Trans drop-offs, and accessible washrooms on the main floor, the Herbert H. Carnegie Centennial Centre is a welcoming and inclusive space for all community members. Ice rental bookings can be done online, and visitors are encouraged to contact the facility at 416-395-6067 to ensure that their needs can be accommodated.
