Helene Gowers Ballet School, located in Subiaco, is a renowned dance institution offering top ballet training for students of all ages and skill levels. With branches in Mount Lawley, Como, Victoria Park, and Subiaco, the school provides a wide range of classes, a dedicated faculty, a comprehensive syllabus, and numerous performance opportunities.
The school offers a variety of classes to cater to every dancer's needs and interests. For the youngest dancers aged 3 to 5 years, the Tiny Tots classes focus on fun and creative movement, incorporating popular children's characters and nursery rhymes. These classes also introduce basic ballet techniques through exercises for the hands and feet.
Recreational classes are available for students of all levels who wish to participate in ballet for fitness and enjoyment. These classes provide a platform for students to develop their love for movement, as well as an appreciation for other art forms, particularly music.
For students aged 6 to 8 years, the Pre-Primary/Primary classes gently introduce ballet technique while emphasising creativity and imagination. Students start to build muscle strength, flexibility, and coordination, and they have the opportunity to participate in exams and medals.
From Levels 1 to 6, students further develop their artistic and spatial awareness, along with good listening skills and critical thinking. As they progress, students also cultivate a sense of self-discipline. Those who wish to sit exams are required to study dance for at least 2 hours per week.
Seniors at the Intermediate, Advanced 1, and Advanced 2 levels are considered professional vocational dancers and teachers. These advanced students participate in examinations that further enhance their skills and prepare them for a career in dance.
The school's dedicated faculty consists of highly qualified and experienced teachers. Miss Helene Gowers leads the Mount Lawley, Como, and Victoria Park (Thursdays) branches, while Miss Gemma Esvelt, Ingrid Horeb, Ashley To, and Annelise Colman teach at the Victoria Park branch on Saturdays.
Helene Gowers Ballet School takes pride in its emphasis on performance and offers Performance Awards to recognise students' dedication and talent. These awards follow a format similar to the Level exams, although more emphasis is placed on the “performance” quality presented. Students receive a trophy and a report for their outstanding achievements.
Presentation Day is a highly anticipated event where certificates, medals, and trophies earned through exams, medal tests, and performance awards are presented. This grand celebration is held in September, giving students the opportunity to showcase their hard work and accomplishments.
