They pride themselves in finding big fish daily and use techniques that are easy to learn for beginners.

When snapper fishing in depths over 30m, Hauraki Express keeps all clearly legal fish. Extensive research has shown that snapper have a poor survival rate upon release from such depths. The skippers can move spots or tie on different lures if anglers are close to their quota and want to target larger fish. Once the snapper quota is met, fishing for snapper stops.

Bait is not used on their charters as it tends to catch smaller snapper in the Hauraki Gulf.

Kingfish, on the other hand, are a hardier fish than snapper and have a high survival rate after release according to tagging studies. Hauraki Express allows anglers to keep one kingfish per person on board and will continuously put them on the kingfish as long as their arms can handle it. If sharks are taking kingfish from the lines, the skippers will move to a different reef immediately. Circle hooks are used for kingfish to prevent deep-hooking fish.

Clients are encouraged to utilise the whole fish rather than just the fillets, and Hauraki Express sends many fish to the Legasea Kai Iki processing station at Westhaven.
