Of water until the opening of a new reservoir in Southrey. The lake is now a popular recreational area, surrounded by beautiful parkland and woodland. Hartsholme Electric Model Boat Club (HEMBC) is fortunate to have access to this picturesque location for their activities.
HEMBC is a gathering place for model boat enthusiasts in Lincoln. The club welcomes beginners and experienced sailors alike, offering a warm and friendly environment to learn, share knowledge, and enjoy the hobby. The members of the club are known for their friendliness, helpfulness, and their ability to have a good laugh together.
With around 70 members, the club meets mainly on Wednesdays, Saturdays, and Sunday mornings between 9am and noon. However, members can also be found at the lakeside at various other times throughout the week. Whether it's a leisurely sail or a more competitive event, the club provides opportunities for sailors of all interests and skill levels.
HEMBC primarily focuses on electric model boats, as internal combustion engines are prohibited by the Lincoln City Council within the designated area of the lake. However, all other types of powered models, including scale, semi-scale, and fast electric, are welcome. The club has an active tug fraternity and a few yacht enthusiasts, although sailing yachts can be challenging due to the surrounding trees affecting the wind over the lake's surface.
In addition to their regular sailing activities, HEMBC also organises “friendly” competitions to test members' sailing skills. Participation in these competitions is voluntary, allowing members to choose how involved they want to be. The club provides insurance and policy guidance on major matters impacting model boating at Hartsholme, ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience for all.
Apart from sailing, HEMBC is also involved in community initiatives. The club has supported the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) through donations and fundraising efforts, raising a total of 115. Members are encouraged to contribute boat magazines to further support the cause. Additionally, HEMBC celebrated its 35th anniversary by creating pin badges, showcasing their pride and dedication to the hobby.
The Hartsholme Country Park provides a stunning backdrop for HEMBC activities. The lake itself has a rich history, originally serving as a water supply for the city of Lincoln in the mid-19th century. Now, it is a hub for recreational and leisure activities, attracting visitors from all walks of life.
