Grey College Boat Club

Grey College Boat Club (GCBC) is a thriving rowing club in Durham, UK, with a proud history dating back to 1959. Led by President Archie Baker, the club is home to over 70 active rowers of all skill levels, from beginners to seasoned pros. Sharing a boathouse with Josephine Butler College Boat Club, GCBC fosters a true sense of community spirit.

Each Easter, GCBC hosts a training camp at Maidenhead Rowing Club. It's an ideal chance for members to improve their sculling, explore different types of boats, and bond with fellow rowers. The club isn't just about hard work on the water; GCBC also organises fantastic social events. From the annual ball in February to the end-of-year tour, there's always something fun going on.

GCBC features separate men's and women's squads, each with about 20 committed rowers. They train up to six times a week and compete in top events like the Rutherford Head, HORR/WEHORR, and Durham Regatta. Members train in various boats—singles, doubles, pairs, VIII’s, and IV’s—ensuring a well-rounded rowing experience.

For those new to rowing, the Development Squad is a great starting point, welcoming around 40 new members each year. Beginners start in wooden IV’s and move on to VIII’s by the second term. After Easter, they join the senior squad to further hone their skills and compete in events like the Novice Cup and Novice Head.
