Join Uswim! At the Greater Manchester Swim (GMS), a big and bold event that offers a warm Madchester welcome! The swim takes place on Saturday, May 18th, 2024 at Dock 9, Salford Quays. With swims ranging from 5 miles to 500m, there is a distance for everyone. Whether you prefer wearing a wetsuit or going skin, all participants are welcome!
GMS is a super friendly event that provides the perfect opportunity to experience open water swimming at its finest. The event is held at the iconic MediaCityUK venue, one of the most popular urban swim venues in the UK. This venue has hosted prestigious events like the 2002 Commonwealth Games and ITU International Salford Triathlons.
To make your experience convenient, plentiful parking is available in the Quayside car park next to the venue. The registration for the event will take place from 10:30 am to 1 pm, depending on the category. It is recommended to arrive 'swim ready' to minimise congestion at the changing area. Timing chips will be provided at registration.
The swim starts will be staggered for each distance, with a 'deep water' start. There is a 5-minute 'acclimatisation time' available in the water before each swim. Swimmers will follow an anti-clockwise route and cross the timing mat at the swim finish ramp.
For those participating in the 500m swim, it is important to note that this is a 'participation' swim designed to challenge newbies and inexperienced swimmers. Therefore, there will be no chip timing or trophies awarded. However, all participants will receive a goody bag because they are incredible!
The water temperature is expected to be around 15 °C, similar to previous years. If you are not fully acclimatised, it is recommended to wear a wetsuit and exercise caution. Prior to the event, it is beneficial to acclimatise yourself by swimming in open water sessions and enjoy an energy-laden breakfast.
GMS promises a memorable experience filled with excitement and camaraderie. Don't miss out on this fantastic opportunity to swim in the heart of Manchester's iconic venue, MediaCityUK!
