Karate is a system of self-defence and physical culture that originated in Okinawa and Japan. It is the integration of the Japanese words Kara (empty) and Te (hand), symbolising that Karate practitioners, known as Karateka, are unarmed but utilise their hands and feet for blocking and striking techniques. Karate training adheres to the code and environment based on Japanese cultural practises.
Shotokan is the most widely practised style of Karate worldwide. Its founder, Gichin Funakoshi, an Okinawan school teacher, first demonstrated his style of Karate in Japan in 1921 before moving there to teach. Funakoshi was elected honorary Head of the Japan Karate Association (JKA) when it was established in 1949.
