Located in Golden Square, the Golden Square Bowling & Croquet Club is a destination for lawn bowls and croquet enthusiasts. With a storied history spanning over a century, the club proudly stands as a bastion of tradition and excellence. In 2022, the club celebrated its centenary, marking a remarkable journey of dedication and sportsmanship.
The club's legacy dates back to the inaugural crowning of its first Club Champion, Fred Courtis, in the season of 1925/26. Notably, the annals of the club history also feature luminaries such as AFL Brownlow Medallist and Geelong football legend, Edward 'Carji' Greeves, who clinched the singles championship title twice in the seasons of 1940/41 and 1941/42. The club has seen illustrious names grace its greens, including Frank Johns with 9 singles championships, Tom Barri with 7, and Bob Campbell with 5.
Golden Square's prowess extends beyond individual accolades, as the club has proudly secured numerous Association pennants. One of its greatest achievements was an unprecedented streak of four consecutive A1 topships in the years 1960/61/62/63. The club's dedication to excellence was further underscored in the 2013/14 season when they triumphantly captured the Div 1 Saturday pennant and the Div 1 Mid-week championship.
The club boasts a vibrant community with active members, including a growing junior contingent, approaching 200. It offers a range of opportunities for bowlers and croquet players, from competitive pennant games to social matches and even carpet bowls. Whether you are a seasoned player or a beginner, there is a place for everyone at Golden Square.
Beyond the greens, the club invites visitors to experience its renowned hospitality at its licenced venue. Whether you want to enjoy a casual game of barefoot bowls or host a special function, the club's doors are open wide to welcome you. With a dedicated bar manager and a range of catering options, the club ensures that all guests are well taken care of.
