Welcome to the Goju Ryu Karate Club Gisborne! Our club is a proud member of the Traditional Okinawa Goju-Ryu Karate-Do Federation New Zealand (TOGKFNZ), and we specialise in the traditional style of karate that originated from Okinawa, Japan. Led by Higaonna Morio Sensei, who is a world-renowned Okinawa Karate practitioner and the TOGKF Chief Instructor, our club strives to uphold the rich traditions and techniques of Goju Ryu Karate.
We offer training sessions on Mondays from 5:15 PM to 6:45 PM, and on Wednesdays from 5:15 PM to 6:45 PM, during the school term. Our doors are open to children aged 7 years and above, as well as adults. You can find us at the Ilminster Intermediate School Gymnasium, located at 70 De Lautour Rd, Gisborne.
Joining our karate club comes with numerous benefits. Karate helps develop self-esteem, confidence, patience, respect, discipline, and the spirit of both the mind and body. Through regular training, students can build a strong character, improve their fitness and coordination, learn goal setting, enhance memory retention, and have fun in the process.
If you're interested in learning more about Goju Ryu Karate, we invite you to visit our Facebook page or email us for directions to our training location. You can also find additional information on our Google Sites page.
Feel free to explore our online membership form if you're ready to become a part of our club. Our website also provides resources on the history of Goju Ryu, dojo etiquette, what to wear to karate, ranks and grading, Goju Ryu katas, and karate terms to assist both new and experienced practitioners on their karate journey.
As an active club, we participate in various events throughout the year. One upcoming event is the National Gasshuku, which will be held in Lower Hutt in November 2023. We also organise the East Coast-Hawkes Bay Spring Camp in October 2024, at Omatua Lodge in Napier. Stay tuned for registration details as the event approaches.
