Goju Ryu Karate

Goju Ryu Karate, located in Invercargill, is a traditional Okinawan Karate school that focuses on a wide range of karate techniques suitable for all levels of training. The school emphasises the development of personal strengths within the framework of traditional karate training.

The name Goju Ryu derives its meaning from the combination of two words: “Go” which translates to physical hardness and strength of character, and "Ju” which represents the gentleness that flows from it. “Ryu” simply means style. Students are also introduced to the Kata of Goju Ryu, which are a series of choreographed movements used for training and self-defence.

Goju Ryu Karate is a part of the International Okinawan Goju-Ryu Karate-do Federation of New Zealand (IOGKFNZ) and is affiliated with the International Okinawan Goju-Ryu Karate-do Federation (IOGKF), under the guidance of World Chief Instructor Nakamura Tetsuji Sensei. The IOGKFNZ is the largest Goju-Ryu Karate body in New Zealand and is dedicated to preserving and promoting the traditional Okinawan style of karate.
