Welcome to Globe Bowling & Billiards Club Ltd, located on Park Crescent in Accrington, Lancashire. Established in 1900, this club has a rich history and offers a range of facilities for its members to enjoy.
Originally built as a tea rooms for the foreman and managers of Howard and Bulloughs in 1895, the club has evolved over the years. In its early days, it featured tennis courts, a bowling green, and a billiard room. Initially, it did not have a licence to sell alcohol. In 1939, it became a private limited company, with a board of directors consisting of twelve men plus a secretary.
This tradition continues today, with six members up for re-election each year. Until the late seventies, it was a men-only club.
The club's history includes notable personalities such as steward Murdo Macualy, a former Accrington police officer, and his wife Alice. Their son Richard is a close friend of mine. Their attention to detail, including a strict dress code, was highly regarded. The bowling teams in the seventies were extremely popular, with the club fielding multiple teams in various leagues.
The club has faced numerous challenges over the years, including financial difficulties that nearly led to closure. However, the dedication of the committee, who volunteered their time and even ran the bar for free, kept the club afloat. The telephone mast has been a major source of revenue, helping to cover expenses.
Today, the club continues to thrive, thanks to the ongoing efforts of the committee and the devotion of its greenkeepers, who consistently maintain the excellent condition of the bowling green. In addition, the club boasts an impressive snooker room, which is highly regarded and well-utilised by the members.
The club's function room is available for hire and is in high demand for private gatherings and events. Whether you're hosting a birthday party, anniversary celebration, or any other special occasion, our function room is the perfect venue.
If you're interested in becoming a member, the club welcomes all applications. Membership fees are 10 per year for social members and 30 for bowling members.
