Taken up residence. However, in 2017, a group of dedicated individuals, with a passion for rowing and a desire to revive the sport in Glasgow schools, came together to re-establish the Glasgow Schools Rowing Club.
Since its revival, GSRC has been providing rowing training and coaching for school-aged children living in the West of Scotland. The club caters to all abilities, accommodating complete beginners who want to learn the sport, as well as those who aspire to compete at an international level representing Scotland and Great Britain.
Coaching at GSRC is provided by a team of both volunteer and professional coaches. Their expertise ensures that rowers receive top-notch training and guidance throughout their journey with the club. Additionally, the performance programme at GSRC is supported by The Glasgow Academy, enhancing the club's ability to develop high-performing athletes.
GSRC is operated by an elected management committee, who oversee the club's operations and make strategic decisions to promote the growth and success of the club. Their dedication has been instrumental in establishing GSRC as a Scottish Charitable Incorporated Organisation with Registration Number SC047806.
The club's venue is the East Boathouse located in Glasgow Green, Glasgow G40 1HB. This picturesque location serves as the base for their rowing activities, while land-based training takes place at The Glasgow Academy. These facilities provide an ideal environment for rowers to hone their skills and prepare for competitions.
Membership at GSRC is open to children aged 12 to 18. Beginners are introduced to basic skills on land and water, starting with training in larger, more stable crew boats before progressing to singles and pairs. For those with aspirations of representing Scotland and Great Britain, the performance programme offers a pathway to achieve their goals.
Parents are also encouraged to become members of GSRC, as this allows them to have voting rights at the Annual General Meeting and eligibility to join the management committee. The annual membership fee for rowers is 250, while parents pay a fee of 25. Convenient payment options, such as bank transfer, are available.
Glasgow Schools Rowing Club has a rich history that dates back to 1942 when it was established and rowed from Clydesdale Amateur Rowing Club. In 1951, with the support of Glasgow Corporation, the club established its own boat club at the East Boathouse in Glasgow Green. During its early years, the club saw significant participation from fifteen Glasgow schools, with over 138 pupils actively rowing.
However, due to various factors, including industrial action by teachers in the 1970s, the rowing activities at the club saw a decline. Despite this setback, a few schools remained active until the early 1980s. Unfortunately, the boathouse eventually became vacant, with only pigeons finding solace within its walls.
But in 2017, the resurgence of GSRC brought new life to the East Boathouse, as a group of passionate individuals recognised the importance of rowing in schools and worked tirelessly to revive the sport. Since then, GSRC has been dedicated to providing opportunities and support for school-aged children interested in rowing, ensuring that the sport thrives once again in Glasgow schools.
