Welcome to Glasgow East Juniors RFC, a rugby club based in Glasgow, Scotland. At Glasgow East Juniors RFC, they strive to make fitness fun for young people. Their mission is to introduce primary and secondary school-aged children to rugby in a welcoming environment while developing their skills and fostering teamwork.
The club welcomes boys and girls from P1 up to and including S2. They are based in Barrachnie Park, Bailleston (Glasgow), where they hold all their summer training sessions. In the winter, they move their Tuesday evening sessions indoors to Barlanark Community Centre, with Sunday afternoons continuing outdoors. More details can be found on their website, and they encourage everyone to come along and join them soon.
Joining Glasgow East Juniors RFC is easy. Interested individuals can simply come down to the club during scheduled training times and get involved. They offer a free three-session trial period without any commitment. As a volunteer-led club, they are always on the lookout for new volunteers and coaches.
If anyone is interested in getting involved, they would be delighted to hear from them. Contact information can be found on their website's contact page.
The club holds training sessions twice a week. On Tuesdays, the sessions run from 6:30 pm to 7:30 pm, and on Sundays, they have two groups. The P1-P3 group trains for one hour, while the P4-S2 groups train for an additional half hour. From March to September, all sessions are held outdoors at Barrachnie Park.
From October to February, Sunday sessions continue at Barrachnie Park, but Tuesday evening sessions move indoors to Barlanark Community Centre (G33 4RZ). The timings for the indoor sessions are extended and staggered to make the best use of the hall, with different age groups training at different times.
The club offers different training sessions for various age groups. For the youngest players in the Micro P1 to P3 group, the focus is on non-contact sessions that allow the children to have fun, learn about teamwork, and develop the basic skills of rugby. The sessions include ball handling, mini drills, and playground games to introduce the youngsters to the core skills of rugby while keeping them active and engaged.
For older primary school children in the Mini/Midi P4 to P6 group, the coaches continue the skills training started in the Micros. They focus on developing pass technique and the basics of tackling, using tackle bags to safely introduce this element of the game. Mini-games and drills are incorporated to keep the players moving and improve their overall skills.
Secondary school-aged players in the Youth P7, S1 & S2 group move up to youth training. They work on developing their overall game, including scrum and lineout skills, tackling, and kicking technique under the guidance of qualified coaches. All club coaches have PVG certification and progress through various stages of coach education facilitated by the SRU (Scottish Rugby Union), as well as the club's own coach development programme.
Glasgow East Juniors RFC recommends the use of rugby boots and gum shields for all players. They also emphasise the importance of staying hydrated and recommend that all players bring water to training sessions.
